Albert Sbar was born June 1, 1918. His parents came to the US from Eastern Europe around the turn of the century and established a dry goods business at 3rd and Cherry Sts. in Camden, NJ. Albert was the fourth of six Sbar children in a household bustling with activities centered on family, business and the Jewish community.
He graduated from Camden High School and took courses at Drexel University.
A lover of music, Albert played clarinet and saxophone in the high school band and other groups around the city. He was a strong supporter and on the Board of Directors of the Haddonfield Symphony – Now Symphony in C.
Albert was a businessman by profession. He founded Sbar’s, first located at 815 Broadway, in 1952. It grew to be one of the largest craft wholesale suppliers in the United States.
In addition to running the business, Albert and his wife, Thelma, raised three children and found time to become involved in the Prime Minister's Club for Israel Bonds, the Boy Scouts of America and the YMCA of South Camden.
Albert loved being surrounded by family, including his sisters, brother and their extended families.
He planned and coordinated numerous family trips/cruises to Europe, Israel, many other places.
He financed these adventures, and made sure everyone could participate - often 30 to 40 people over a period of nearly 20 years.
As noted, he was very active in the Jewish community. The Sbars were long time members of Temple Beth Sholom in Cherry Hill, and Albert was Treasurer for a time. In recognition of his commitment to Israel, the Jewish National Fund of New Jersey Southern Region presented Albert Sbar with the Man of the Year Award, September 1992.
