Ludwig (Lou) was born in Bad Hersfeld, in Hesse, Germany on November 30, 1924 to Julius and Johanna Stern. He had one older sister, Irmgard (Irme) (b. January 29, 1921, d. December 24, 2004, married to Walter Herz). His Bar Mitzvah took place in 1937. Lou's family was able to leave Germany in August 1938 and arrived in NYC on Labor Day, September 3, 1938. His father had helped his mother, Settchen, raise his 7 siblings after their father, Levi, died shortly after the youngest brother, Ernst, was born. Uncle Ernst came to America in the 1920's and was the one who signed an affidavit that Lou's family would not have to depend on the state for financial security. They lived in Astoria, Long Island in a 4th floor walk-up apartment building, not far from other relatives. Lou served in the US Army during World War II, going back to Germany where he was able to serve as a translator as the US fought in Germany. After the war, he used his GI benefits to attend City College of NY, and then Columbia University School of Engineering, earning a degree in chemical engineering. On graduation he shook hands with the then president of Columbia University, General Dwight Eisenhower. He earned his master’s degree from Drexel University in Philadelphia, eventually working for Sun Oil Company for the remainder of his career, where in the 1960's he worked on computer security issues. He married Lottie F. (nee Seligman) on August 31, 1952. They moved to Camden in 1954, where they joined Beth El and he became the first PTA chair of the Beth El Foundation School (which eventually became Kelman Brown Academy). They moved to Haddon Township in 1960, where they joined TBS. There he became active and attended every Shabbat morning service. He was Religious Committee chair, Communications chair (involved with the weekly Temple Talk and periodic TempleGram, which featured longer articles), and served as a Vice-President. He also was very involved with the Jewish Federation of Southern New Jersey, serving on the Bureau of Jewish Education for many years, including as chair of Midrasha Hebrew Junior College. Together with Lottie, Lou had 2 children - Alvin (married to Jodi Cohen) and Betty (married to Frank Adler), and 3 grandsons - Joshua (married to Allison Goldberg), Geoffrey (married to Ilana Hollander) and Lawrence (married to Alison McElgunn). He died on July 3, 1988.
